Synth bass

Where a synth bass usually needs help

Synth bass can be all sub and no pitch, so the chorus drops out on earbuds.

Keep a sub layer, and make sure a harmonic around 700–1500 Hz carries the melody when the sub cannot be played.

FrequencyJobWhat you are hearing
40 HzSub oscillatorSine weight. Filter rumble below the note.
100 HzBodyThe audible fundamental on a speaker with some bass.
300 HzWoofResonant filters pile up here. Cut the resonance, not the whole bass.
900 HzPhone speakerThe harmonic that survives a high-pass in a laptop.
2500 HzEdgeDistortion and filter bite. Tuck it under the vocal.

These are starting points for this instrument, not a preset. The numbers differ from the 808 bass page because the problems differ. Playback is a peaking filter around +9 dB or −10 dB, or a solo, as described in the methodology.

FAQ

Synth bass EQ questions

What frequency is most important on a synth bass?

Start with the fundamental or the mud, not the air. On this page that means reading the first rows of the table and soloing them before you touch a high shelf.

Will these exact numbers fit my recording?

No. Microphones, tunings and arrangements move the resonances. Use the labels to know what you are hunting, then sweep a few semitones either side.

How loud should I listen?

Keep soloed bands at a conversation level. These pages can generate steady tones and noise, which fatigue your ears faster than music. If anything rings or feels uncomfortable, stop and turn the volume down.
