How chords sit

A chord is two or three intervals at once

Major is a major third under a minor third. Minor swaps them. Diminished stacks two minor thirds. Augmented stacks two major thirds. Suspended chords replace the third with a 2nd or a 4th, which is why they feel unfinished. Sevenths add one more note on top.

If a quality will not stick, open its page and play it next to the neighbor. C major, C minor, C7 and Cmaj7 are the four published for every root. The trainer also drills diminished, augmented, sus2, sus4, minor 7 and half-diminished.

FAQ

Chord training questions

Which chords are in the beginner set?

Major and minor triads only. Add triads (diminished and augmented), suspended chords, or sevenths when you can tell major from minor without thinking.

Block chord or arpeggio?

A block chord is the real-world test. An upward arpeggio is easier because you hear the intervals in order. Train both.

Do the reference pages match this trainer?

Yes. The qualities, formulas and short descriptions on the chord pages are the same ones this trainer uses, so a song you learn here is the song the page names.
